1200 year old Schleswig


In 2004 the town of Schleswig celebrated it's 1200th anniversary! The town was first mentioned in the year of 804 and was named "Sliaswich" and "Haithabu" in the 9th and 10th centuries. This early aged town of Schleswig was the trade center of the Vikings in northern Europe, and you can gather much information on the ancient culture in the Viking museum called "Haithabu".

Today, Schleswig is a modern cultural center, with museums such as the castle of Gottorf, art exhibitions and a beautiful old town center around the Schleswig Cathedral. The Schlei Lake and the pedestrian shopping zone inviting for a stroll around through the town. For your culinary pleasures you'll find reasonable restaurants and snugly pubs. The Viking-Tower situated on the shore of the Schlei Lake ist almost 100 meters high and offers an wonderful view of the town and surrounding countryside.
