The geographic region Angeln and the neighboring areas in Denmark were strongholds of the ancient Viking culture. You'll find barrows (old grave sites) along the countryside, and in Schleswig there is a Viking museum located on the site where Haithabu, one of the most important Viking towns in those historical times, once existed.
